Taiwo Awoniyi Drafted Into Super Eagles Squad as Osimhen Misses AFCON Qualifiers:
Coventry City striker returns to Nigeria setup ahead of Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau clashes
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have made a late adjustment to their squad for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures, with Taiwo Awoniyi called up to replace Victor Osimhen.
Awoniyi, who currently features for Coventry City, has been brought into the squad after Osimhen was ruled out of the international window due to injury.
The Galatasaray forward remains in recovery and has not been deemed fit enough to participate in the forthcoming national-team assignments.
Awoniyi’s inclusion provides head coach Eric Chelle with another attacking option as the Super Eagles prepare for their encounters against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The return of the former Nottingham Forest striker also marks another opportunity for the forward to contribute to Nigeria’s push for a strong qualifying campaign.
With Osimhen unavailable, attention will now turn to how Awoniyi and the other attacking options are utilised as Nigeria work towards securing important points in the qualification race.
The Super Eagles are expected to intensify preparations for the two fixtures, with the technical crew focused on maintaining the team’s attacking strength despite the absence of one of its key forwards.
Awoniyi’s return will equally be welcomed by Nigerian football supporters, who will be looking forward to seeing the striker once again wear the national colours and make his contribution on the international stage.
