2027: Opposition leaders have begun negotiations for alternative political platform –Salihu Moh. Lukman
ABUJA: Salihu Moh. Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), shared his perspective on the ongoing political restructuring and alliances forming ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking in a New Year message issued in Abuja, Lukman revealed that opposition leaders have already begun discussions but expressed concerns about the political culture in Nigeria.
He noted, “While opposition political leaders, including disenchanted APC members, have started negotiations to establish an alternative political platform, it is crucial to acknowledge that most Nigerian politicians lack a commitment to competitive politics.
“Driven largely by personal ambitions to secure electoral positions, many politicians focus on imposing themselves and manipulating processes to achieve their goals. This attitude must change.
“Our political leaders must understand that if they genuinely aim to rescue Nigeria, they need to go beyond superficial claims of sacrificing personal ambitions for a new political platform. Instead, opposition leaders must embrace political competition as the foundation for selecting leaders at all levels.”
Lukman, a former Director-General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), further emphasized that opposition leaders who prioritize self-interest and imposition strategies contribute to the country’s challenges.
“To Nigerians, it is time for us to wake up and take control of our destiny. The power and audacity of Nigerian politicians stem from the passivity and inaction of ordinary citizens. When the majority of Nigerians treat politics as the exclusive domain of politicians, we risk undermining competition, allowing poor leadership, and perpetuating a cycle of misery, distrust, and negativity,” Lukman warned.
