Defence Minister Issues Fresh Directive to Troops, Intensifies Offensive Against Terrorists:
Military Ordered to Sustain Aggressive Operations as FG Unveils New Security Measures;
The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling terrorism and banditry with renewed military strategies, as the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), directed frontline troops to intensify offensive operations against criminal elements across the country.
The directive was issued during an operational visit to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the Defence Minister, accompanied by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, assessed the security situation following recent attacks linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in parts of the North-East.
Addressing the troops, General Musa urged military personnel to remain proactive in carrying out their constitutional responsibilities, emphasizing that soldiers deployed to operational theatres must act decisively against terrorists encountered during operations.
He reiterated that troops should remain focused on their primary assignment of protecting the nation and combating insurgency, while cautioning them against involvement in illegal activities capable of undermining the integrity of the Armed Forces.
Federal Government Boosts Military Capacity
The Defence Minister disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the acquisition of additional military assets, including aircraft, drones, ammunition, and other operational equipment aimed at strengthening the Armed Forces’ capacity to confront insecurity across the country.
He also highlighted recent improvements in the welfare of military personnel, including salary enhancements and other support initiatives designed to boost morale and operational efficiency.
Security Strategy to Shift Focus
As part of ongoing reforms, General Musa revealed that the military is reviewing its operational deployment strategy by reducing routine checkpoint duties.
Under the new approach, the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) are expected to assume greater responsibility for checkpoint operations, allowing military personnel to concentrate on offensive missions in forests and other criminal hideouts.
According to the minister, the strategy is intended to dismantle terrorist networks more effectively while improving security in vulnerable communities.
Protecting Farmers and Rural Communities
The Defence Minister stressed that restoring security to farming communities remains a top priority, noting that improved access to farmlands is essential for boosting food production, strengthening livelihoods, and enhancing national food security.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes
During the visit, the Defence Minister and his delegation paid homage to fallen military personnel at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery and expressed condolences to the Government and people of Borno State over the recent bomb attacks that reportedly claimed several lives and left many others injured.
General Musa condemned the attacks, describing terrorism as a threat to national peace and unity, while urging troops to remain disciplined, resilient, and committed to restoring lasting peace across the country.
The latest directives underscore the Federal Government’s determination to intensify the fight against terrorism and banditry through improved operational strategies, enhanced military capability, and sustained support for security personnel.
