Tinubu Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Support for Workers, Arrears Payment to Begin in November:

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly approved a monthly transport support of ₦70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs.

The approval was among the resolutions reached on Tuesday in Abuja during a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The meeting followed renewed demands by organised labour over workers’ welfare, the rising cost of living and the implementation of outstanding agreements between the government and labour unions.

In another development, the Federal Government reportedly agreed to pay outstanding peculiar allowance arrears dating from May 1, 2026, in three equal monthly instalments, with payment scheduled to commence in November.

The government also agreed with the NLC that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted and begin meetings immediately to determine an effective date for implementing a new national minimum wage.

The latest meeting follows an earlier conciliation session held on October 22, 2026, as both parties continue engagements aimed at addressing workers’ concerns and resolving outstanding labour-related issues.

The proposed transport intervention and arrears payment are expected to provide some relief to eligible workers, while the planned minimum wage negotiations could shape the next phase of discussions on workers’ earnings and welfare.

Further details on the implementation of the approved measures and the timetable for the minimum wage negotiations are expected to clarify the next steps.
