2027 Kwara Governorship: APC Elders Insist “It’s Kwara North’s Turn
Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders Caucus in Kwara State has declared its position, calling for the governorship ticket of the ruling party to be zoned to Kwara North Senatorial District.
The elders made this known on Friday at a crowded press conference in Ilorin, the state capital. The briefing was led by the Caucus chairman, Barr. Kunle Sulaiman, alongside prominent party leaders including Chief James Ayeni, Senator Mohammed Ahmed, Chief Ebun Afolayan, Hon. Hassan Bagudu, and Barr. Salman Jawondo (SAN).
The Caucus commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for what it described as his “superlative performance” over the last six years. They praised his people-centered policies, infrastructural development, and commitment to urban renewal across the state.
“In the interest of equity, fairness, and justice, we unanimously agree that the next gubernatorial candidate of our great party should come from Kwara North,” the elders said.
The group recalled its 2022 press statement supporting AbdulRazaq’s re-election bid, noting that Kwara Central and Kwara South have both had their fair share of leadership. With Kwara Central producing governors for 20 years and Kwara South for eight, they argued it is now the turn of Kwara North.
While lauding the governor’s role in attracting federal projects, including major road networks such as the Ilorin-Kabba Expressway, Ilorin-Ogbomosho dual carriageway, and Bode Saadu–Kaiama–Kosubosu road, the elders also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and reforms, particularly in taxation and local government autonomy.
They pledged continued support for President Tinubu’s administration and called on eligible voters in Kwara to take advantage of the ongoing voter registration exercise to secure their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2027 polls.
“As we look toward the next election cycle, our position remains clear — Kwara North should produce the next governor under APC for the sake of justice and balance,” the Caucus reaffirmed.
The declaration is expected to shape the political discourse in Kwara as stakeholders begin early preparations for the 2027 governorship race.
