Ifelodun LG Crisis: Deputy Speaker, Majority Leader Removed as Police Arrest Lawmakers

A fresh crisis has erupted in the Ifelodun Local Government Legislative Council, Kwara State, after the Speaker announced the sudden removal of the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Ismail Abdulkadir, and the Majority Leader, Hon. Ibrahim Akeem.

The dramatic development quickly spiraled into chaos within the chamber, sparking heated exchanges among lawmakers and leading to violent confrontations outside. The situation worsened when security operatives intervened, resulting in the arrest of the Deputy Speaker, the Majority Leader, and Hon. Ibrahim, representing Idofian Ward 2.

Sources confirmed that the decision to remove the principal officers came without prior notice, leaving many council members shocked. Several lawmakers have described the Speaker’s move as unjustified and politically motivated.

Amid speculation, fingers have been pointed at the Council Chairman, Hon. Femi Yusuf, with allegations that he orchestrated the removals. However, in a swift response, the chairman denied any involvement. In a statement issued on Thursday, he maintained he was unaware of the decision and pledged to work towards restoring peace and stability in the council.

The arrests have raised fresh concerns about the fragile relationship between the legislative and executive arms of the local government. Analysts warn that the growing tension could undermine governance in Ifelodun, affecting service delivery at the grassroots level.

Police authorities confirmed the arrests but provided little detail on the circumstances leading to them. Investigations are ongoing, while mediators are said to be working behind the scenes to resolve the crisis.

Stakeholders, including community leaders and political actors, have urged restraint and called on both sides to prioritize dialogue over confrontation. They stressed that the council must find common ground to avoid further disruptions that could paralyze governance.

As the drama continues to unfold, residents of Ifelodun are anxiously waiting to see whether peace will return to the legislative chamber or if the crisis will deepen, further destabilizing the local government.
